WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration is warning doctors not to prescribe the drugs Viagra and Cialis that were the most popular treatments for erectile dysfunction.
The agency issued a warning in February, after the deaths of two patients. The FDA said the deaths are the result of heart problems and are caused by drugs that affect blood flow. Doctors say they will continue prescribing Viagra and Cialis despite the deaths.
"This is a tragedy, and one that has been going on for more than a year," said Dr. John Zucconi, an orthopedic surgeon who treats patients with erectile dysfunction.
He said doctors should be concerned about the safety of certain drugs that affect blood flow. "People shouldn't be taking these drugs because they may be potentially dangerous to them," he said.
The FDA said the agency also will consider drug interactions with other medicines, including diabetes drugs.
The FDA said it is working to identify the drugs that cause the deaths, and will monitor any deaths that occur.
But Zucconi said he is still concerned about drug interactions and will make sure the FDA follows up with all drugs that cause the deaths.
"We have to be vigilant," he said.
"If they don't have that risk, I don't know what the risk is," Zucconi said. "We're taking an active duty life support drug."
The agency also is working with drug companies to identify potential side effects associated with drugs that are not approved for use by patients.
The FDA has not disclosed a full list of drugs the agency is investigating.
Zucconi said the FDA is continuing to monitor drug safety closely.
The agency said that because the deaths of these two patients were caused by the drugs that affect blood flow, the agency will take action to stop prescribing them. The FDA also is requiring drug companies to disclose how the drugs affect blood flow.
"This is a tragedy," said Zucconi, who said he was taking diabetes medication for two years. "It's a tragedy."

In a report this month, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a federal agency that monitors the health care of patients, found that more than half of the patients who were given a heart implant developed heart problems, including angina, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, shortness of breath and dyspnea. This was the highest level of heart problems since 1998, when the NIH started its work to examine the heart.
The NIH is also reviewing whether to stop its work on heart patients.
The report said that the most recent findings from the NIH were that patients who were given a heart implant had a 50 percent higher risk of developing a heart attack than patients who were given a placebo, and that patients who were given a heart implant had a 44 percent greater risk of developing a heart attack than patients who were given a placebo.
